What's broken

In 2010, the US Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission gave corporations the right to spend unlimited amounts of money as independent political expenditures.

The result has been a dramatic increase in both corporate spending and untraceable 'dark money'.

Campaign spending grew from $190M in 2008 to $756M in 2024

How we fix it

The Corporate Power Reset strategy rectifies this: it does not overturn the Supreme Court Ruling, but it makes it irrelevant.

  • Citizens United gave corporations the RIGHT to spend money in politics.
  • But that becomes irrelevant if corporations do not have the POWER to.
  • STATES decide what POWERS corporations have.
  • So if a state stops granting corporations the power to spend money in politics, they no longer can.

THAT is the legal strategy called the "CORPORATE POWER RESET".

Corporate Power Reset strategy

If passed in California

It would:

  • stop entities incorporated in California from spending money in politics anywhere in the US.
  • end anonymous donations, i.e. 'dark money' in California politics.

It would not stop individuals, such as billionaires, from spending unlimited amounts of money in politics. But they would no longer do so anonymously.

Has it ever been done?

  • Montana is the first state to attempt it, as a ballot measure launched in June 2025.
  • Hawaii became the first state to make it law, with a bill passed in May 2026.

California launched it in February 2026.
